Cognitive debt

Definition

Cognitive debt is the accumulating deficit in a person's own cognitive engagement, memory formation, and sense of ownership that builds when mental work is habitually offloaded to an external aid such as an LLM: the work still gets done, but the neural and behavioral capacity it would have exercised goes progressively under-used, and the shortfall compounds across sessions rather than resetting when the tool is put away.

Explanation

The term comes from a four-month MIT Media Lab EEG study of essay writing (arXiv 2506.08872), a single 54-participant preprint rather than a replicated literature, so the evidence is suggestive, not settled. Its core mechanism is that cognitive activity scales down in proportion to external support: participants wrote under LLM, search-engine, or no-tool conditions for three sessions, and EEG brain connectivity ordered the groups brain-only strongest, search intermediate, LLM weakest, while LLM users also produced more homogeneous essays, reported the lowest ownership of their text, and often failed to quote sentences they had just written — evidence that offloading composition weakens encoding at the moment of writing. The crossover fourth session is what makes it debt rather than a transient mode: participants who had written with the LLM and then lost it stayed under-engaged (reduced alpha and beta connectivity), whereas participants who had worked unaided and only then received the LLM showed higher recall and engagement comparable to search users. Ordering matters — unaided effort first builds capacity that tool-first work never establishes.
