Harness-memory lock-in¶
Definition¶
Harness-memory lock-in is the dependence that follows from memory being a harness capability rather than a plugin: managing context — what loads at session start, what survives compaction, how long-term stores are written and read — is the harness's core job, so whoever controls the harness controls the memory; and because accumulated interaction state is what personalizes an agent and compounds in value, running a closed or API-hosted harness converts that state into switching cost held by the provider instead of an asset held by the builder.
Explanation¶
The mechanism runs through context: memory is context the harness chooses to persist and re-inject, so the harness decides how memory files like AGENTS.md load, what survives compaction, how skill and memory metadata are presented, and whether interactions are stored queryably — which is why memory cannot currently be swapped in as a standalone service and no mature harness-independent memory abstraction exists. From that follows an ownership gradient. Stateful provider APIs (a responses API, server-side compaction) hold thread state on the provider's servers, so you cannot swap models and resume a thread. A closed-source harness produces memory artifacts of undocumented shape, non-transferable to another harness. Worst, a fully API-hosted harness leaves accumulated long-term memory invisible and unexportable entirely. Providers are incentivized toward that end of the gradient precisely because stateless model APIs kept switching cheap: accumulated interaction state personalizes an agent, compounds into a proprietary dataset, and is forfeited on switching — even an open-source harness can close the loop, as when a compaction summary is emitted encrypted and unusable outside its vendor's ecosystem. The practical rule: before adopting a harness or a stateful API feature, establish where session and long-term state physically lives and whether it exports. The source is a LangChain essay arguing for its own open-source harness — an interested party — but the mechanism claim that context management is the harness's job, and the cited product behaviors, are checkable independently of the pitch.

Applications¶
Vendor and architecture due diligence for agent products: before adopting a harness, SDK, or stateful API feature, determine where session and long-term memory lives, in what format, and whether it can be exported and replayed elsewhere — and weigh open harnesses where the accumulated memory is strategic.
