Memory as a harness capability¶
Definition¶
Memory as a harness capability is the architectural claim that an AI agent's memory cannot be added as an external plugin, because it emerges from decisions only the agent harness controls — what gets loaded into context and how, what survives compaction, whether the agent can rewrite its own instructions and external state, and whether past interactions are stored queryably; managing context is the harness's core job, and memory is a product of that management rather than a separable component.
Explanation¶
The argument comes from Sarah Wooders, co-creator of MemGPT and co-founder of Letta — a practitioner post on X that closes with a plug for Letta's own memory-first harness, so it argues a vendor's worldview, but from primary experience: MemGPT was a stateful agent harness before the term harness existed, its memory emerging from tools for rewriting prompts and managing external state combined with the harness's own context management, and it was routinely mistaken for a pluggable RAG tool. The mechanism of the claim is a decomposition of memory: retrieval over past session data can be a plugin, but retrieval is a small part of memory — and even there it is hard to beat grep — while the rest lives in invisible harness decisions no plugin can reach: how instruction files like AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md are loaded, how skill metadata is surfaced (system prompt versus system messages), whether the agent may modify its own system instructions, what survives compaction, whether interactions are stored and made queryable, and how memory metadata and the filesystem are represented to the agent. Different harnesses answer each question differently, which is why asking to plug a memory system into an agent is, in her analogy, like asking to plug driving into a car. The enumerated decisions double as a concrete checklist for evaluating any harness's memory story.
