SIEM visibility gap for agentic AI¶
Definition¶
The SIEM visibility gap for agentic AI is the structural blind spot of traditional security-event platforms: built to correlate structured network, authentication and application telemetry against rule sets, they can record that an API call happened but cannot see the semantic content of AI interactions — whether an input was a prompt injection, whether an output breached policy, or whether a chain of individually innocuous tool calls composed into escalation or exfiltration.
Explanation¶
The gap is architectural, not configurational. Agents operate in a plan–act–evaluate loop across tools, and the OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications (2026) locates agent-specific threats precisely in that multi-step, multi-tool structure, which static correlation rules do not model. Tool-augmented workflows create source-to-sink dataflows — one tool's output becomes another's input — that only become visible when the full chain is logged with causal links intact; without the chain, an incident responder sees a series of unremarkable API calls and never connects them. Closing the gap means generating AI-native security events (prompt-injection detections, policy breaches, tool-call escalations, unauthorized model or route changes) as structured logs inside one's own infrastructure and forwarding them to the existing SIEM, which keeps the established toolchain while adding the semantic layer it cannot produce itself. The source is vendor content and its product pitch should be read as such, but the gap argument stands on the cited OWASP and NIST AI RMF frameworks. For regulated environments it adds a sovereignty corollary: an audit log held in a vendor's infrastructure is evidence you do not control.
