Vocabulary mismatch¶
Definition¶
Vocabulary mismatch is the quantified phenomenon that different people name the same thing differently — Furnas et al. (1987) measured that even domain experts choose the same name for the same object only ~20% of the time — so queries and the documents relevant to them routinely share no terms, bounding what any lexical retrieval can achieve.
Explanation¶
The retrieval-side measurement is Zhao & Callan (2010): an average query term fails to appear in 30–40% of the documents relevant to that query, and this mismatch probability sits at the heart of the Binary Independence Model, one of the founding probabilistic retrieval frameworks. The phenomenon has layers — inflectional variants (addressed by stemming and lemmatization), synonymy across speakers, and terminology drift over time (a search for "type 1 diabetes mellitus" missing older papers on "juvenile diabetes"). The measured remedies are striking: term-weight prediction targeting mismatch yields potential 50–80% accuracy gains over strong keyword baselines, and expert Boolean CNF expansion 50–300% over unexpanded queries — evidence that mismatch, not ranking subtlety, is often the binding constraint. Furnas's original result also motivated latent semantic indexing, making this the founding problem statement for every technique that reaches beyond literal terms, from thesauri and alias tables to embeddings.
